Building an AI Assistant, 80’s Style
As a Product Manager and technologist, I love pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with AI, APIs, and automation. My latest project? A fully interactive Max Headroom AI, built with Python and a custom web interface hosted on Nginx, that can hold conversations, respond with synchronized video and audio, and even display lifelike idle animations, all running on my local network.
How It Works
Built with Python & Nginx – Python handles API orchestration, while Nginx serves the custom web interface.
Accepts both spoken and text input – Users can type or talk, and Max listens attentively.
AI-powered responses – OpenAI generates text-based replies that are instantly displayed.
Realistic speech & animation – Eleven Labs synthesizes speech, while GooeyAI brings Max to life visually.
Seamless user experience – Accessible from desktop, laptop, and mobile devices
Bringing Personality to AI
One of the most exciting parts? Max isn’t just a chatbot, he’s a character.
When he’s not actively responding, he performs pseudo-random idle actions: glancing around, making costume changes, or reacting to his surroundings.
When spoken to, he “listens” attentively, appearing thoughtful while generating his response.
The result? A more engaging, human-like AI experience that feels truly interactive.
Key Takeaways for Product & AI Development
Python for API Orchestration & Latency Management – Handling multiple AI services efficiently is critical for real-time responses.
UX & AI Interaction Design – A conversational agent is more than just text—it’s about creating an engaging user experience.
Emerging AI Use Cases – Interactive AI characters could redefine customer engagement, education, and entertainment.
This project, along with my recent work recommending a roadmap for implementing responsible AI, has reinforced an important lesson for product management: staying hands-on with new technologies sparks innovation while ensuring AI experiences are not only engaging but also ethical and transparent.
Would love to hear from others, what AI-driven experiences have you experimented with? How do you see AI avatars shaping future interactions?
